It was seen that any
elastic material subjected to an uniaxial stress undergoes deformations in the
lateral directions also. The ratio of the lateral strain to the corresponding
longitudinal (axial) strain is found to be constant for a particular material
upto its elastic limit. The constant is called the ‘Poissons Ratio’ of the
material and is denoted by the greek letter v (Nu) which is always a fraction.
(Some authors denotes poisson’s ratio by 1/m so that m may be expressed as a
whole number)
