Poisson’s Ratio

It was seen that any elastic material subjected to an uniaxial stress undergoes deformations in the lateral directions also. The ratio of the lateral strain to the corresponding longitudinal (axial) strain is found to be constant for a particular material upto its elastic limit. The constant is called the ‘Poissons Ratio’ of the material and is denoted by the greek letter v (Nu) which is always a fraction. (Some authors denotes poisson’s ratio by 1/m so that m may be expressed as a whole number)

Poisson’s Ratio, v = Lateral Strain / Longitudinal Strain
